【摘要】:Thepurposeofthistestmethodistostandardizetheroutinedescriptionofpeatandotherorganicsoilsforvarioususes(suchas,peatlandinventoriesandresourceevaluations).ThistestmethodisamodifiedversionofawidelyusedsystemoriginallydevelopedbyL.vonPost.3Thistestmethodshouldbeusedtosupplementotherfieldinformation,suchas,sitelocation,surfacemorphology,surfacevegetation,watertable,moisturecontent,fibercontent,woodcontent,andvisuallyidentifiableplanttypesandparts.Itshouldbestressedthatthisisavisual/manualmethodandisnotmeanttoreplacethemoreprecisemethodoflaboratoryclassificationofpeat(seeClassificationD4427).ItshouldalsobenotedthatthistestmethodisindependentofthedeterminationofwhetheraparticulardepositcontainspeatthatisdefinedinClassificationD4427onthebasisoflaboratorydeterminationofashcontent(seeTestMethodD2974).Note18212;Thequalityoftheresultproducedbythistestmethodisdependentonthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingit,andthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetesting/sampling/inspection/etc.UsersofthistestmethodarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonmanyfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thistestmethodcoversasystemforvisuallydiscriminatingpeatandotherhighlyorganicsoilsonthebasisofdegreeofhumification.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
